August 19.--Renfield changed suddenly last night. At eight o'clock, he became excited. He began to sniff the air like a dog looking for food. The assistant was surprised. He knows I am interested in Renfield, so he asked him to talk. Renfield is usually polite to the assistant, but last night he was very rude. He refused to talk to him at all.

He only said, "I do not want to talk to you. You are not important. The master is coming!"
