Of course she was not surprised to see me because she did not yet realize where she was. Lucy always wakes up prettily, and even now she behaved like a lady, although she must have been rather horrified at waking up in her night-clothes in a churchyard at night. She must have been very cold, and she trembled a little, and held on to me. When I told her to come home with me at once, she stood up without saying a word. She was as obedient as a child. As we went along the path the gravel hurt my feet and Lucy noticed. She stopped and wanted me to take back my shoes, but I would not take them.
When we got outside the churchyard there was a puddle of water left behind from the storm. I covered my feet with mud so that if we met anyone on the way home, no-one would notice my bare feet. We were lucky and got home without meeting anyone. Once we saw a man, who seemed rather drunk, walking down the street in front of us. We hid in a doorway until he had gone. All the time my heart was beating loudly and sometimes I thought I would faint. I was very worried about Lucy. She had been out in the cold for a long time and that was bad for her health. Also what would people say if they knew what she had been doing?
