The adventure of the speckled band.
I could not sleep that night. I had a feeling that some sort of disaster was going to strike. My sister and I, you will remember, were twins, and you know that twins are often very close together in spirit.
It was a wild night. The wind was howling outside, and the rain was beating and splashing against the windows. Suddenly, in the middle of all the noise of the storm, I heard the wild scream of a terrified woman. I knew it was my sister's voice. I jumped from my bed, pulled my dressing gown around me, and rushed into the corridor. As I opened my door I seemed to hear a low whistle, such as the one my sister had described, and a few moments later a sound, as if a piece of metal had fallen.
