From Mina's Journal

18 August I am happy today, and write sitting on the seat in the churchyard. Lucy is ever so much better. She slept well all last night, and did not disturb me once. The colour seems to be coming back to her cheeks, but she is still rather pale and looks unhealthy. If she were anemic I could understand it, but she is not. She is in a good mood - full of life and cheerful. All her dark moods and silences have now gone. She has just reminded me, (though I didn't need reminding), of that night. It was here, on this seat where we are now, that I found her asleep.

I asked her if she had dreamed of anything that night. Before she answered, that sweet, pucker came into her forehead. She spoke in a half-dreaming kind of way, as if trying to recall it to herself.

"I didn't really dream, but it all seemed to be real. I only wanted to be here in this spot. I don't know why, for I was afraid of something, I don't know what. I remember, though I suppose I was asleep, walking through the streets and over the bridge. A fish leaped from the water as I went by, and I leaned over to look at it. I heard a lot of dogs howling."
