Memories

From Mina's Journal

18 August I am happy today. I'm writing this while sitting on the seat in the churchyard. Lucy is ever so much better. She slept well all last night, and did not disturb me once. The colour seems to be coming back to her cheeks. However she is still rather pale and looks unhealthy. If she had anemia I could understand it, but she does not. She is in a good mood - she is full of life and very cheerful. All her dark moods and silences have now gone. She has just reminded me (though I didn't need to be reminded), of that night. It was here, on this seat where we are now sitting, that I found her asleep.

I asked her if she had dreamed of anything that night. Before she answered, she wrinkled up her forehead in a way that looked very sweet. She spoke as if she was half-dreaming. As if she was trying to recall it for herself.

"I didn't really dream. Everything seemed to be real. I knew I wanted to be here in the churchyard. I don't know why, because I was afraid of something, I don't know what. I remember, though I suppose I was asleep, walking through the streets and over the bridge. A fish leaped from the water as I went by, and I leaned over the bridge to look at it. I heard a lot of dogs howling."
