Sinking in deep water

"I went up the steps to the churchyard. Meanwhile the whole town seemed to be full of dogs all howling at once. Then I seem to remember something long and dark with red eyes. We saw that once in the sunset. Also, all around me I felt something very sweet - but it was very bitter at the same time. And then I felt as though I was sinking into deep, green water. I heard a singing sound in my ears. They say drowning men hear that sound. And then everything seemed to go away from me. My soul seemed to go out from my body and float in the air. I seem to remember that once the West Lighthouse was right under me. Then there was a lot of pain and I felt as though I was in an earthquake. I came back and found you shaking my body. I saw you do it before I felt you shaking me."

Then she began to laugh. It was a strange sort of laugh, and it made me very uneasy. I did not like it, and thought it would be better if Lucy didn't think about it any more. So I started talking about something else. After that Lucy was the same as she was before she was ill. When we got home the fresh breeze had woken her up, and her pale cheeks were really more rosy. Her mother was very pleased when she saw Lucy like that. We all had a very happy evening together.
