A little stroll
It was such a strange thing for her to say, without any reason, that I was rather surprised. I turned around a little to see Lucy properly without seeming to stare at her. She seemed to be daydreaming and there was an expression on her face that I could not understand. I said nothing, but tried to see what she was looking at. She was looking over at our own seat in the churchyard, where a dark figure was sitting alone. I was also surprised, for it seemed for an moment as if the stranger had huge eyes like burning flames. However a second look showed me what it really was.
The red sunlight was shining on the windows of St. Mary's Church behind our seat. As the sun went lower there was just enough change in the reflection to make the light seem to be moving. I told Lucy about this, and she came back to normal with a little jump, but she still looked sad. Perhaps she was thinking of that terrible night up there. We never talk about that night, so I said nothing, and we went home to dinner. Lucy had a headache and went to bed early. When she was asleep I went out for a little stroll. I walked along the cliffs to the west, and was full of sweet sadness, for I was thinking of Jonathan.
