A good-sized bird

The moonlight was bright when I came back home. It was so bright that everything could be seen clearly, although our part of the street was in shadow. I glanced up at our window, and saw Lucy's head leaning out. I took out my handkerchief and waved it but she did not notice me and stayed completely still. Just then the moonlight came round the building and the light fell on the window. There was Lucy with her head lying against the side of the window sill. Her eyes were shut and she was fast asleep. On the window sill beside her was something that looked like a good-sized bird.

I was afraid she might get a chill, so I ran upstairs. When I came into the room Lucy was moving back to her bed. She was still asleep and breathing heavily. She was holding her hand to her throat, as though to protect it from the cold. I did not wake her up, but put her back into her bed. Now I have taken care that the door is locked and the window is tightly closed. Lucy looks so sweet as she sleeps, but she is paler than usual, and she looks very tired and worried. I am afraid that she is upset about something. I wish I could find out what it is.
