More about the Ship
The sudden storm is ending. It is less fierce already, and the sky is becoming red over the Yorkshire hills. The people in the crowd are returning to their homes. In the next newspaper, I shall tell our readers more about the ship which came so miraculously into harbour in the storm.
August. We now know the sequel to the strange story of the ship in the storm last night. This story is also very surprising. We have discovered that the ship is from the Russian port of Varna. Its name is the Demeter. She was mostly carrying silver sand (which was used to keep the ship balanced) with only a small amount of cargo. This cargo was large wooden boxes full of mould.
The ship was handed over to the Russian consul, and the consul paid all the harbour taxes. Many people wanted to know what happened to the dog which had jumped ashore when the ship reached the land. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is very strong in Whitby, and members of the Society have tried to find the animal. They are disspointed that it has not been found. The dog seems to have compleyely disappeared from the town.
