The dog was probably very frightened. Maybe it is in the countryside outside town, and is hiding there in terror. Some people are afraid that this is what has happened, because the dog itself might be dangerous in future. It is obviously a fierce brute. Early this morning a large dog was found dead in the roadway. This dog had been fighting against a savage opponent. Its throat had been torn away, and its belly was slit open. It looked as though this had been done with a large claw.

Later The Board of Trade inspector has kindly allowed me to look over the log-book of the Demeter. This log book was in order until three days ago. However, there was nothing of special interest except the story of the missing men.

The most interesting thing however, is the paper which was found in the bottle. Today this paper was shown at the inquest. Together the log book and the message in the bottle tell the strangest story I have ever heard.
