Anyone would be very happy to have such a helpful friend. Therefore we must believe that Mr Winkle was so happy and grateful that he was unable to speak, because he didn't say anything. Instead he kept walking along - rather slowly.
'We are exactly on time,' said Mr Snodgrass as they climbed the fence of the first field; 'the sunset is just dying.'
Mr Winkle looked up at the setting sun and painfully thought that it was very possible that he would be dying as well, very soon.
'There's the officer,' exclaimed Mr Winkle, after they had walked a few minutes more.
'Where?' said Mr Snodgrass.
'There - the gentleman in the blue cloak.' Mr Snodgrass looked in the direction where his friend was pointing. He saw a man in a cloak as his friend had said. The officer showed that he had seen Winkle and Snodgrass by waving with his hand; and then he walked away while the two friends followed a short distance behind.
