Sherlock Holmes Investigates

The adventure of the speckled band.

We opened a small door and we went into the house. Inside there were doors for three bedrooms. Holmes didn't want to look in the third bedroom, so we went to the second room. This was where Miss Stoner was now sleeping - in the room where her sister had died. It was a friendly little room, with a low ceiling and a wide fireplace. There was a brown chest of drawers in one corner, a small bed and a dressing-table next to the window.

These things and two small chairs were all the furniture in the room except for a square of carpet in the centre. The wood on the walls was brown and very old. Holmes sat on one of the chairs in a corner. His eyes travelled round and round and up and down. He looked at everything in the room.

"Where does that bell ring?" he asked at last. He pointed to a thick bell-rope which hung down by the bed. The end hung over the pillow.
