1. Matt: United will never win the cup.
Ed: Says who?
Disagreement. Ed thinks Matt is wrong, and he wants to know where Matt got this idea from (suggesting also that Matt does not know enough to have his own opinion).
2. Ed: United will win the cup.
Lucy: Why do you think so?
Neutral. Lucy is not agreeing or disagreeing, but simply asking Ed to explain his opinion..
3. Graham: This is the wettest summer ever.
Jill: I hear 1956 was pretty bad.
Disagreement. Jill is disagreeing very politely, by expressing a different opinion without saying wether she agrees with it.
4. Ophelia: I hate Bill.
Toby: For now, but give it a few days.
Agreement. Toby agrees that Ophelia might hate Bill now, but he does not think that she will feel that way for long.
5. Karen: That's a daft thing to do!
Jeremy: It worked, didn't it?
Disagreement. Jeremy is saying that if what he did had the result he wanted, it was not a stupid thing to do.
6. George: I thought that was a terrible movie.
John: Well, you are the one who wanted to go.
Agreement. John didn't want to go to the movie at all - he is saying that if George had listened to his opinion, he would not have had to find out for himself.
7. Louise: Karen can never do anything properly.
Greg: What's she done to annoy you?
Neutral. Greg doesn't want to argue, so he moves the conversation on without agreeing or disagreeing with Louise.

Pete: Why not?
Agreement. 'Why not?' here means that the speaker thinks it is a good idea and cannot think of any reasonwhy it is not.
