This is an example of a question, and how to answer it. The text in black is the exam question, the text in green is what you should be writing (or thinking!).
Your Social Studies class have to answer the following question: Do you think film and sports stars are paid too much money? Give your opinion, and your reasons for having that opinion
Quick check - do I understand the question? Do I agree or disagree with the opinion? (I think I don't agree)
Do you think film and sports stars are paid too much money?
My Essay plan
Remember, if I have trouble saying something, make the sentences more simple and use more of them!
Start
Give examples or say why some stars are paid too much .. what about other people, their work is important too (about 70 words)
Main part
Give my opinion. People decide how much is enough because they won't pay more - $100 for a cinema ticket? I think not. Also only a few people earn big money - lots of poor actors too. Stars are an inspiration. (about 110 words)
Conclusion
We pay, so we dont think it is too much (the rest)
Quick check - does the argument make sense?
Essay
Every day we read that a football star has signed a contract worth millions of pounds, or that a superstar earned a fortune for a movie. This money is spent on luxury houses and private jets, while people who work just as hard, schoolteachers and nurses for example, get just enough money to pay the bills every month. Top sports and film stars often earn more money than the prime minister or president of a country. How can this be right?
There is another thing to think about however. Who pays the wages of these people? It might be the football clubs and the film studios, but they have to get their money from somewhere too - and they get it from us. So really, it is we who pay these enormous salaries, and we must think that they are worth it, because we pay to go to the cinema and the games. Also, for every star who earns millions there are thousands of actors and sportsmen who earn very small salaries. They keep going because they dream that one day they will get to the top, and the stars keep their dream alive.
So maybe the big stars are paid a lot of money. But if we, the public, decide that it is too much, we would stop paying. But most people prefer to see blockbuster movies and top sports events, and are happy to pay for them.
Quick check
Did I keep to the word count?
Did I answer the question?
Did I discuss both sides of the argument?
Was there one fact or opinion in each sentence, and one idea in each paragraph?
Were my sentences mostly between 10 and 20 words?
