Reading

The Reading test is combined with the Use of English test. The material is the sort of thing you might find in a magazine, a book or a manual. However, the texts are from a wide variety of sources, so be ready for anything! Each part of the test has the same format as the material here - so doing these tests will give you an idea what the exam is like. In the exam you have six to ten questions for each part, but here we sometimes give you more questions for extra practice.

There are three parts to the reading test. Each part is around 500 words, though you can expect to find texts that have 200 words more or less than this. There are 22 questions. The first two parts (Parts 5 and 6 of the combined exam) are worth up to two marks, the third part questions are worth 1 mark.

The first part is reading a text and answering six multiple-choice questions about the ideas and attitudes of the writer. The second part has six sections of the text removed and you have to put them back in the right order. (There is usually a seventh section which you do not need.) In the third part you are given a lot of information, and you have to decide which of ten statements match the different parts of the text you will read.

Currently the Parts 1 and 2 of the reading test (Part 5 of the combined paper) is available here for you to practice. The other parts are on our main website and will be added here soon.
