If we had taken
umbrellas we would not
have got so wet
If we had stayed at
home I'd not have
got wet at all
A third conditional sentence has two clauses, an "if" clause and a "result" clause:
if clause |
if + subject + verb in past perfect form
if she had taken a taxi
|
result clause |
subject + would (OR could, OR might)+ have + past participle
she would not have been so late.
|
The third conditional is used to talk about things which did not happen in the past. It is often used to express criticism or regret:
For example:
If I had been a good skier I would not have had an accident.
(I am not a good skier, so I fell down and broke my leg.)
