August 19.--There was a strange and sudden change in Renfield last night. Around eight o'clock, he became excited and started sniffing around like a hunting dog searching for animals. The assistant was surprised by his actions. Because he knows I am interested in Renfield, he encouraged him to speak. Renfield is usually polite and obedient to the assistant, but tonight the man told me that Renfield was extremely rude and proud. He refused to speak to him at all.
