Feeling Uneasy

We are expecting a visit soon from Mr Holmwood. (He is actually the Hon. Arthur Holmwood, only son of Lord Godalming). For now he has to stay in London, because his father is not very well. I think dear Lucy is counting the moments until he comes. She wants to take him up to the seat on the churchyard cliff and show him the beauty of Whitby. I think waiting for him to come is disturbing her. She will be all right when he arrives.

27 July - No news from Jonathan. I am getting quite uneasy about him, though I do not know why I should. Still, I really wish that he would write, even if it was only a single line.

Lucy walks in her sleep more than ever. Every night I am awakened by her moving about the room. Fortunately, the weather is so hot that she cannot get cold. But still, I am worried, and tired from being woken up all the time. I too am getting nervous and wakeful.

Vocabulary:

The Hon.: 'The honourable' - an aristocratic title
Counting the moments: Wanting something to happen
