Making Lucy Tired
Finally the man became angry, and jumped down and kicked the dog. Then he took it by the back of the neck and half-pulled and half-threw it onto a tombstone. The moment it touched the stone the poor dog became quiet and started trembling. It did not try to get away, but stayed down, shivering and frightened. The dog was so scared that I felt sorry for it and I tried to comfort it, but I could not help. Lucy was full of pity, too, but she did not try to touch the dog.
Same day, 11 pm. Oh, but I am tired! If I didn't want to write in my diary every day I would not open it tonight. So that she would be too tired to sleep-walk, I took Lucy for a long walk. We had a lovely time. After a while Lucy was very happy. I think this was because some sweet cows came to meet us in a field close to the lighthouse. At first they really frightened us and so we forgot about everything else. That meant we could start the day again, as if it was new. We had an excellent tea at Robin Hood’s Bay in a sweet little old-fashioned inn, with a window right over the seaweed-covered rocks of the beach. Then we walked home with some, or rather many, stops to rest.
