All is not well
Thank God that Lucy is still healthy. Mr. Holmwood has had to go to see his father, who has become very ill. Lucy is annoyed and worried because his visit has been postponed. Fortunately this does not change the way she looks. She has put on a little bit of weight, and her cheeks are a lovely rose-pink. She no longer looks as bloodless as she did before. I hope things will stay that way.
3 August. Another week has gone by, and I still have no news from Jonathan. I have heard from Mr Hawkins, but he has not heard from Jonathan either. Oh, I do hope Jonathan is not ill. I am sure that he would have written if he was ill. When I look at that last letter of his, somehow it does not satisfy me. It does not feel as though Jonathan wrote it, and yet it is his handwriting. There is no mistake about that.
For the last week Lucy has not walked much in her sleep. However, there is something about her which I do not understand. There is a strange sort of focus about her. Even when she is sleeping, she seems to be watching me. At night, she tries to open the door while she is sleepwalking. When she finds that the door is locked, she goes about the room searching for the key.
