Dr Seward's diary

5 June. The more I understand about Renfield the more interesting the man becomes. His character is very well developed in certain ways. That is, he is selfish, secretive, and purposeful.

I wish I could understand what he wants to do. He seems to have a definite plan in mind, but I do not know what that plan is. The best thing about him is his love of animals. However, that love shows itself in such a strange way that sometimes I think that really he is abnormally cruel. He chooses strange animals as pets.

Just now his hobby is catching flies. At present he has so many that I have had to complain to him about this. I had expected him to become furious. Instead to my astonishment, he seriously thought about what I had said. After a moment he said, 'May I have three days? Then I shall clear them away.' Of course, I said that would be fine. I must watch him.

18 June. Now he has turned his attention to spiders. He has got several very big spiders in a box. He keeps feeding them his flies, and he now has much fewer of these. However, he has used half his food to attract more flies into his room from outside.
