A pleasant view

I think this is the nicest place in Whitby. It on the hill is right over the town, and has a full view of the harbour. You can see right up the bay to where the hill called Kettleness stretches out into the sea. This hill is so steep that part of one side has fallen away, and some of the graves have been destroyed.

In one place the stone on the graves hangs out over the hill, above the sandy pathway far below. In the churchyard there are paths to walk on, with seats beside them. People go there and sit there all day looking at the beautiful view and enjoying the breeze. I myself shall often come, and sit here and work. Indeed, I am writing now, with my book on my knee.

The harbour is below me. On the far side there is one long granite wall stretching out into the sea. It curves outwards at the end. In the middle of the curve is a lighthouse. There is a strong seawall built outside of that wall. On the other side, the seawall bends like an elbow, but the other way, and there is another lighthouse on the end. Between the two seawalls there is a narrow opening into the harbour, though the harbour quickly gets wide after that.
