A postscript from Mina, and Dr Steward's diary

 

P.S. Oh, about Number Three, I don't have to tell you about Number Three, do I? Besides, I am not sure what to say. It all happened so fast. One second he was coming into the room and then before I knew it, both his arms were round me, and he was kissing me. I am very, very happy. I don't know what I have done to deserve such happiness. In the future I will try to show that I am grateful because I have someone who is a lover, a husband, and a friend.

Dr. Steward's Diary

25 May. I have not eaten much today. I cannot eat and cannot rest, so I'm writing my diary instead. Since Lucy refused to marry me yesterday I have had a sort of empty feeling. Nothing in the world seems important enough to be worth doing. I know that the only cure for this sort of thing is work, so today I was with my patients. I selected one patient whom I have previously studied with much interest. He is so strange, yet charming that I am determined to understand him as well as I can. Today I seemed to get nearer than ever before to understanding the nature of his illness.
