Sherlock Holmes Investigates

The Six Napoleons

Holmes pointed to the street lamp above our heads. "Here, he could see what he was doing, but over there he could not. That is why he did it here."

"By Jove! that's true," said the detective. "Now that I come to think of it, Dr. Barnicot's bust was broken not far from his lamp. Well, Mr. Holmes, what are we to do with that fact?"

"To remember it - to file it away in our minds. We may come across something later which will be connected to it. What do you propose to do now, Lestrade?"

"In my opinion, the most practical way to go from here is to identify the dead man. There should be no difficulty about that. We should find out who he is and who his friends and business partners are. When we have done that we should begin to learn what he was doing in Pitt Street last night. We will also have an idea of who it was who met him and killed him on Mr. Horace Harker's doorstep. Don't you think so?"

"I am sure you are right. However that is not quite the way which I would do it."

"What would you do then?"

Oh, you must not let me influence you in any way. I suggest that you do the investigation your way and I do mine. We can compare our notes afterwards, and each person's investigation will supplement the other."

"Very good," said Lestrade.
