Sherlock Holmes Investigates

The Six Napoleons

Holmes pointed to the street lamp above our heads. "Here, he could see what he was doing, but over there he could not. That is why he did it here."

"By Jove! that's true," said the detective. "Now that you have said so, I remember that Dr. Barnicot's bust was broken under his lamp. Well, Mr. Holmes, what are we to do with this fact?"

"To remember it - to keep in our minds. We may find out something later which will make it important. What are you planning to do next, Lestrade?"

"In my opinion, the best way to go from here is to find out who the dead man was. There should be no difficulty about that. We should find out who he is and who his friends and business partners are. When we have done that we will begin to learn what he was doing in Pitt Street last night. We will also have an idea of who met him and killed him on Mr. Horace Harker's doorstep. Don't you think so?"

"I am sure you are right. However that is not exactly how I would do it."

"What would you do then?"

Oh, you must not let me influence you in any way. I suggest that you do the investigation your way and I do it my way. We can talk together afterwards, and each person's investigation will help the other person's."

"Very good," said Lestrade.
