"We Szekelys have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races. They fought in the same way as lions fight, to be the master. Here is where all the European races have mixed together. The Ugric tribe came down from Iceland, bringing with them the fighting spirit which was the gift of Thor and Wodin. This same spirit their Berserkers displayed on the seaboards of Europe, aye, and of Asia and Africa too. The peoples there thought that werewolves had come for them.

They came here, too, and they found the Huns, whose warlike fury had swept the earth like a living flame. The peoples they killed believed that the Huns were children of old witches. These witches, they said, were expelled from Scythia and had children with the devils in the desert. Fools, fools! What devil or what witch was ever so great as Attila, whose blood is in these veins?"

He held up his arms. "No wonder that we were a conquering race, that we were proud! When the Magyar, the Lombard, the Bulgar, or the Turk attacked our frontiers with thousands of men, we drove them back.
