A disguise

24 June. Last night the Count left me early. He went to his own room and locked the door. After that, I waited as long as I dared and then I ran up the stairs. I looked out of the window which looked to the south. I wanted to watch for the Count, because there is something going on. The Gypsies are staying somewhere in the castle and they are doing some kind of work. I know that because sometimes, far away, I hear the sound of them doing digging. I don't know what they are doing, but I am sure that whatever it is, it is something bad.

I stood at the window a little bit less than half an hour. Then I saw something coming out of the Count's window. I stepped back and watched carefully, and saw the whole man emerge. Then I had another shock. He was wearing the suit of clothes which I had worn whilst travelling here. Over his shoulder was the terrible bag which I had seen the women take away. There was no doubt where he was going, and he was wearing my clothes too! This, then, is his new evil plan. He will allow others to see what they think is me. These people will say that they saw me in the towns or villages posting my own letters. And any wickedness which he does, the local people will think it was me who did it.
