Looking around7 May. I have had a good rest and enjoyed the last twenty-four hours and now it is early morning again. I slept most of the day, and woke up when I felt like it. When I had dressed I went into the room where we had eaten supper. A cold breakfast was waiting for me. There was coffee, and the pot was still hot, because it had been put in front of the fire. There was a card on the table, with a message on it
'I have to be away for a while. Do not wait for me. D.'
I settled down to eat and had a good meal. When I had finished, I looked for a bell, so that I could tell the servants I had finished, but I could not find one. There are certainly some odd things wrong with the house. It is strange, because everywhere I look I can see signs that the Count is rich. The plates and knives on the table are made of gold. They are so beautiful that they must be worth a lot of money. The curtains and cloth on the chairs and sofas and the coverings of my bed are all made of very expensive and beautiful material. They must have been very expensive when they were made. Now they are hundreds of years old, but they still look very good. I saw something like them once in a royal palace in England, but the cloth there was old and damaged.
