Dracula's castleHe moved his long arms, as though pushing something which I could not see out of the way. The wolves moved back and then even further back. Just then a heavy cloud passed across the face of the moon, and we were again in darkness. When I could see once more, the driver was climbing into the carriage, and the wolves had disappeared. This was all so strange and unnatural that I felt dreadfully scared. I was afraid to speak or move. We went on our way, now in almost complete darkness, because the thick clouds hid the moon. The journey seemed to go on as if it would never end.
We kept moving uphill, and we only went downhill for very short times. Mostly we were always going up. Suddenly, I noticed that the driver was stopping the horses. We were in the courtyard of a huge ruined castle. No light came from the castle's tall black windows, and the broken walls made a dark line against the sky. I must have been asleep. If I had been completely awake I would certainly have noticed that we were driving up to such a remarkable place. In the darkness the courtyard looked as if it was very big. Several dark passages led from the courtyard into other parts of the castle, and this might have made it seem bigger than it really is. I have not yet been able to see the courtyard in daylight.
