Jonathan Harker's Journal

3 May. I am now in Bistritz - I left Munich at 8:35 p.m. on 1st May, and arrived in Vienna early next morning. I should have arrived at 6:46, but the train was an hour late. Then I went on to Budapest which seems a wonderful place. But I only had a quick look at it from the train had a short time to walk through the streets. I didn't want to go very far from the station, because we had arrived late and the train was going to leave as near to the correct time as possible.

But while I was in Budapest I felt that we were leaving the West and entering the East. The Danube river here is of magnificent width and depth, and crossing the most western of the splendid bridges over the river took us into lands which had once been ruled by the Turks.

We left Budapest in good time, and after nightfall the train arrived in Klausenburgh. Here I stopped for the night at the Hotel Royale. For dinner, or rather for supper, I had a chicken cooked with red pepper. It very good but made me thirsty. (Note. I must get the recipe for *Mina.) The waiter told me that the meal was called "paprika hendl," and he added that it was a national dish. This means I should be able to get it anywhere among the Carpathian mountains.

Though I do not speak German well, I find it is very useful here. Indeed, I don't know how I would manage without it.
