'Not the man!' said Mr Snodgrass.

'Not the man!' said the gentleman with the camp-stool in his hand.

'Certainly not,' replied the little doctor. 'That's not the person who insulted me last night.'

'Very extraordinary!' exclaimed the officer.

'Very,' said the gentleman with the camp-stool. 'The only question is whether this gentleman, since he is here, must be considered to be a representative of the person who insulted our friend Doctor Slammer yesterday evening, whether he is really that person or not'.

When he had made this suggestion, looking very wise and mysterious as he did this, the man with the camp-stool took a large pinch of snuff, and looked importantly around, as if he was an authority in such matters.

Now Mr Winkle had opened his eyes, and his ears too, when he heard his opponent call out for the duel to be stopped. Perceiving that the doctor had made some mistake (afterwards he said that he had always known that the Doctor was mistaken), he at once saw if he concealed the real reason he had come out to fight, his reputation would increase greatly.

Therefore he stepped boldly forward, and said, 'I am not the person. I know it.'

'Then that,' said the man with the camp-stool, 'is an affront to Doctor Slammer, and a good reason for immediately carrying on with the duel.'
