The Pickwick Papers

The Doctor and the Widow

As well as all these many things, the little doctor was doing something else which was even more important. Never for a moment did he stop giving all his attention to a little old widow. This lady's rich dress and rich jewellery showed that she might be someone who could provide a bit of extra money to a person who did not have much for himself.

Mr Tupman and his companion had both been staring at the doctor and the widow for some time. Then the stranger finally spoke.

'The old girl seems to have lots of money. The doctor seems to think he is something special. I've an idea - not a bad idea, it will be good fun in fact' . When he heard this, Mr Tupman looked at his companion to see what he was thinking. 'I'll dance with the widow,' said the stranger.

'Who is she?' asked Mr Tupman. The stranger replied 'I don't know. I've never seen her in my life - but I can do better than the doctor - watch me.'
