The Pickwick Papers

About Dogs and Ladies

'Not at the moment,' said Mr Winkle.

'Ah! you should keep dogs - they are fine animals - they are very wise - I had a dog of my own once. I was out shooting one day - entering some private property - I whistled and the dog stopped - I called him again; he just stood absolutely still. I saw that he was staring at a board - and on it was written -"The farmer will shoot all dogs found on this property" - so he wouldn't go there. A wonderful dog - a very valuable dog.'

'That is a very interesting story,' said Mr Pickwick. 'Can I write it in my notebook?'

'Certainly, Sir, certainly - I have hundred more stories about the same animal. that's a fine girl, Sir' (he was speaking to Mr Tracy Tupman, who had been looking admiringly at a young lady by the side of the road).

'Very fine!' said Mr Tupman.

'English girls are not so fine as Spanish - Spanish girls are so beautiful. Black hair - black eyes - lovely bodies - sweet and beautiful.'

'You have been in Spain, sir?' said Mr Tracy Tupman.
