So the ghost made plans to appear to Virginia's boyfriend . He wanted to look like a vampire. This was horrible. Old Lady Startup saw it one terrible New Year's Eve, in the year 1764. It was so bad that she started screaming, and carried on screaming until she was very sick. She died three days later. She did not leave any of her money to the Cantervilles, who were her nearest famly. Instead she left it all to her doctor in London. But this time however, the ghost was too scared of the twins, and at the last moment, he could not make himself leave his room. So the little Duke slept in peace in the great feather bed in the Royal Bedroom, and dreamed of Virginia.
A few days after this, Virginia and the Duke went out riding in the fields. While getting through a hedge on her horse, Virginia tore her riding clothes very badly. When she came home, she decided to go up by the back stairs so no-one would see her torn clothes. The door of the Tapestry Chamber was open, and as Virginia was running past she thought she could see someone inside. She thought it was her mother's maid, who sometimes used to bring her work there, Verginia went into the room to ask the maid to mend her torn clothes. She was very surprised to see that it was not the maid in the room - it was the Canterville Ghost himself!
