As she did this, the moon came out from behind a cloud. It filled the little churchyard with silver moonlight. Then a nightingale began to sing from some distant trees. Virginia remembered that this was exactly how the ghost had described the Garden of Death. Her eyes filled up with tears, and she didn't speak to anyone all the way home.

The next morning Mr Otis spoke to Lord Canterville before he went back to London. He wanted to talk about the jewels which the ghost had given to Virginia. They were truly magnificent, especially a necklace of precious stones which had been made in Venice.

The necklace was an excellent example of the jewellery of four hundred years ago. The necklace and the other jewels were so expensive that Mr Otis did not think that his daughter should be allowed to keep them.

'My lord,' he said to Lord Canterville, 'I know that in this country small unimportant things stay in your family and are passed down from father to son. It is quite clear to me that these jewels belong to your family. So please take them to London with you.'

'You should think of them as your property which you lost and then got back in a very strange way. My daughter is just a child, and I am glad to say that she is still not interested in silly things like jewellery.'

'Mrs Otis knows a lot about Art because she was lucky enough to spend several winters in Boston when she was a girl, (and Boston is a great center of art). She has informed me that these precious stones will get you a lot of money if you decide to sell them.'
