The skeleton's long bony fingers were trying to reach an old-fashioned plate and jug. But because of the chain holding the skeleton to the wall, he couldn't quite touch them.

It seemed that the jug had once been filled with water, because green stuff was growing inside it. There was nothing on the plate except a pile of dust.

Virginia knelt down beside the skeleton, and put her little hands together. She began to pray silently while the others looked at the skeleton in astonishment. They could now see the terrible tragedy which had started the story of the Canterville ghost.

Suddenly one of the twins said loudly 'Oh, look!'.

He had been at the window trying to find out what part of the house this hidden room was in. 'Look! There are flowers on the old almond tree. I thought it was dead, but I can see the flowers quite clearly in the moonlight.'

'God has forgiven the ghost,' said Virginia. She stood up, and a beautiful light seemed to shine on her face. 'I think you must be an angel!' said the young Duke, and he put his arm round her neck, and kissed her.
