It was a very difficult performance to prepare this disguise. (I am using words from the theatre to talk about one of the greatest mysteries of the world of ghosts, or, to talk more scientifically, the higher-natural world.) In fact it took the ghost three whole hours to get his disguise ready.

But when everything was done, and he was very pleased with the way that he looked. The big boots that went with the clothes were just a little too large for him, and he could only find one of the two pistols.

Still, he thought that he had done a really good job with the disguise. So at a quarter past one he stepped out of the walls and walked quietly down the corridor.

The room occupied by the twins was called the Blue Bed Chamber, because of the colour of its decorations. When the ghost reached it, he saw that the door was slightly open. He wanted to enter the room in a way that would frighten and impress the twins, so he opened the door very quickly.

Suddenly a heavy jug of water fell right down on him, making him completely wet. Then the jug itself went past and almost hit him on his shoulder. Then the ghost heard the twins screaming with laughter. He was so upset that he ran back to his room as fast as he could go.

The next day he had to stay in bed because he had a very bad cold. The only thing that made him a bit happier about what had happened was that he had not taken his head with him. If he had taken his head, it might have been hurt, or something worse might have happened to it.
