The Jungle book

Mowgli and Bagheera

He came with the others to the Council Rock, when the Pack met. That was where he discovered that if he stared hard at any wolf, the wolf would not be able to stare back, and so he used to do this for fun. At other times he would pick the long thorns out of the pads of his friends, for wolves suffer terribly from thorns and burs in their fur.

He would go down the hill into the fields by night, and look very curiously at the villagers in their huts. But he did not trust men. Once Bagheera showed him a square box with a gate. It was so cunningly hidden in the jungle that Mowgli nearly walked into it. Bagheera told him that it was a trap made by men. Better than anything else Mowgli loved to go with Bagheera into the dark warm heart of the forest. He would sleep all through the day, and at night see how Bagheera killed his food.

Bagheera killed right and left as he felt hungry, and so did Mowgli - but there was one animal he did not kill. As soon as he was old enough to understand such things, Bagheera told him that he must never touch cattle. This was because his life had been bought for the price of a bull. "All the jungle is yours," said Bagheera, "and you can kill everything that you are strong enough to kill; but because of the bull that bought you, you must never kill or eat any cattle. That is the Law of the Jungle."
