"Come back soon!" said Father Wolf. "Oh, come again soon; because your mother and I are old."

"Come soon," said Mother Wolf, "my little son. Because, child of man, I loved you more than I loved my cubs."

"Of course I will come," said Mowgli. "And when I come back, I will kill Shere Khan and put his skin upon the Council Rock. Do not forget me! Tell the people of the jungle never to forget me!"

The dawn was just starting when Mowgli went down the hill alone, to meet those strange things that are called men.
