Mowgli and Bagheera
Mowgli came with the others to meet at the Council Rock. That was where he found out that if he looked hard at any wolf, the wolf could not look back into his eyes. Sometimes he would do this for fun. Wolves have a lot of trouble with things getting stuck in their feet and fur, and here Mowgli's fingers were able to help them.
At night, Mowgli sometimes went down the hill into the fields. He was very interested in the people of the village and the houses they lved in. Once Bagheera showed him a square box with a gate. It was very cleverly hidden in the jungle and Mowgli nearly walked into it. Bagheera told him that it was a trap made by men, and after this Mowgli did not trust men. What Mowgli loved to do was to go with Bagheera into the dark warm heart of the forest. He would sleep all through the day, and at night see how Bagheera killed his food.
Bagheera killed easily when he felt hungry, and so did Mowgli - but there was one animal he did not kill. As soon as he was old enough to understand what Bagheera said, Bagheera told him that he must never kill cows. This was because Bagheera had paid for Mowgli's life with a bull.. "All the jungle is yours," said Bagheera, "and you can kill everything that you are strong enough to kill. But because I brought your life with a bull you must never kill or eat any cows or bulls. That is the Law of the Jungle."
