Stating Preferences

Stating preferences allows you to tell people politely what you would like to do or what you would prefer to do instead of something else.

 

Look at the sentences below:

Example 1:

Suggestion: Shall we go to Spain for our next holiday?
Answer:       I would prefer Portugal this year.

Example 2.

Suggestion: Which university would you like to go to?
Answer:       If possible I would like to go to Oxford.

Example 3.

Suggestion: Shall we have fish or meat for supper today?
Answer:       If it is ok with you, I would like fish.

Example4.

Suggestion: What shall we do tonight?
Answer:       I fancy going to the cinema

Example 5.

Suggestion: Let's go to the restaurant tonight.
Answer:       I would rather stay at home and do some more work.

Example 6.

Suggestion: Shall we have some coffee?
Answer:       Tea would be better for me.
