Highwaymen were a menace on lonely country roads of the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Because it was expensive to travel, and banks were primitive, highwaymen often succeeded in robbing considerable amounts of money from wealthy travellers. Though our highwayman here is the gentleman thief of legend, in reality highwaymen were brutal bandits who had no hesitation in killing or torturing their victims.
