English for Everybody - Advanced course
oops!
Here's how it happened...

How could anyone fight in a war called The War of Jenkin's Ear? Yet that is the name of a war fought between England and Spain, and, yes, it was about Mr Jenkin's ear.

So of course the English started smuggling.
When the English heard about Jenkins the public were furious.
They cut off his ear as a punishment.
Firstly, Spain forbade English traders from their colonies.
Consequently the Prime Minister was forced to declare war.
And that's why the war started in 1739.
But the Spanish caught a smuggler called Jenkins.
