The historic town of Rymington has seen many changes over the years. The local school, Bately comprehensive, is named after the famous highwayman of the 17th century, who was hanged in Rymington. His body was displayed in the morgue which is still used by the local hospital. Where he was hanged in the town square, there is now a cenotaph remembering soldiers of Rymington who died in war.
Rymington's other well-known memorial is the Wenton memorial - a statue and library which commemorate the only citizen of Rymington to win a medal in the olympic games. The oldest building in the town is the rectory where the local priests lived until the small chapel it stood beside burned down in a fire in 1912. Those interested in architecture will want to see the prize-winning RymCentre apartment block. Inside the building is an atrium with a splendid collection of South American plants and trees. The penthouse at the top of the building is owned by Rymington's best known citizen - millionaire ex-rock star Jimmy "Axeman" Bilt. Tourists staying overnight in Rymington are advised to book early at the Slumberdale bed and breakfast because it can get quite full in summer. Guests at Slumberdales are always presented with a bouquet of fresh flowers when they leave. The owners also own the local florist and sell flowers from all over Europe. The perfect way to see the countryside near Rymington is by renting bicycles and cycling along the beautiful bridleway which begins at the lay-by just outside town, where you can leave your car for an hour or two!
