English for Everybody - Advanced course

Let's try....

Reading between the lines.

Here are some conversations from people as they meet. You can tell a lot about them by their choice of language. Read the statements below and click if you think they are correct or not. Then click on Analysis to check. Remember, this exercise also builds your cultural vocabulary, so the analysis is particularly about English speakers in Britain.

1. Sue: Jim, come here and meet Mary. Mary, this is Jim.
Jim: How do you do Mary? I'm Jim Jones.

a. Jim is eager to meet Mary. Yes No Probably not
b. Sue is a dominating character. Yes No Probably not
c. Jim is not very happy with Sue. Yes No Probably not

Analysis

a. Probably not b. yes c. probably not.
Sue is giving orders (a lot depends on the tone of voice here). Jim wants to prove he doesn't take orders from Sue by deliberately using a different, more formal register ("How do you do", using his surname.) By doing that, he is being less friendly to Mary, so he is probably not very interested in meeting her.
