Keeping in touch - Reading

Manual, Letter, Minutes, Note

Mr McAndrew has dropped his briefcase and mixed up his paperwork. He has asked Jackie to help him to sort out the papers.

Look at these extracts and decide whether they are from -
A computer manual     a formal business letter,     a note from a colleague, or     the minutes of a meeting.

Check with "Answers" at the bottom of the page.

1. We note that despite our recent communications you have not responded as to how you intend to honour your contractual obligations. We must notify you therefore that if we have not heard from you by the 25th of this month we will be forced to take further steps.

2. Mr Bysem responded that he was aware of the situation, but it would take time to resolve. He pointed out that he did not have the power to give a direct order, but could only advise on the best ways of making contact.

3. After installation, check that everything is operating properly. If there seems to be no power, check the cables. If you have done this and turned the machine on, and there is still no response, call the maintenance hotline.

4. We will also conclude that you do not wish to continue further with our agreement, and that we should be taking urgent steps to find another contractor. If, on the other hand, you wish our relationship to continue, it is imperative that you respond urgently to our queries.

5. So I have left the full details on my computer, in a file labelled 'Bysem meeting'. I thought the meeting went rather well, though we did not get everything we wanted. Still, half a loaf is better than no bread!

6. Ms Wilson argued that this approach would mean that her department was left in the dark until at least the end of the month, but the chairman, Mr Angus, said he would see to it personally that Ms Wilson was kept in the loop.

7. Anyway I have to run, because I have to get organised for a formal dinner at the rotary club this evening. Let me know how you get on with the material, and I'll meet with you tomorrow, and we can discuss everything then.

8. Otherwise, run through the initial checkup, as specified on page 32. Do not forget to register the product with us either on-line of with the form which you will find on the back cover.
